In August of 2011 Steve Dezember II was diagnosed with ALS, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.
The disorder is characterized by rapidly progressive weakness, muscle atrophy and fasciculations, muscle spasticity, difficulty speaking, difficulty swallowing, and decline in breathing ability, essentially burying its victims alive.
Two days after being diagnosed, Steve said to his girlfriend of six months, “This is going to be really hard, and if you leave, I understand. But if you stay…will you marry me?”
She said YES!
Hope and Steve were married in October 2011 and immediately set out on a journey of a lifetime, traveling to Belize and across the United States, spreading awareness about ALS.
As Hope is now Steve’s full-time caregiver, Steve and Hope rely solely on the donations of others to cover bills, food, and medicine.
